My F150 has a LS rear and F250 has an electric locker on the rear. I have never experienced any overheating with a LS, and found it the most convenient (transparent) to use. Lockers (IMHO) are great for extreme off road environments, and getting out of a jam when stuck. I have only used my rear locker once pulling a tractor out of the mud, that a dumb operator buried (me).
On a beach making your U turn approach you are not going to like a locked rear. I realize the OP's question was specifically about differentials, but if my primary off-roading was in sand I would be looking at tires and the ability to air down.
