I towed with an explorer . I would recommend a A liner. I had 2 pups .the last up we had had a gross max weight of 2400 lbs.it ready to camp was like 2200 lbs. It had a nice ac , electric roof (u hit a button and the roof pops up and down), a theoford potty . The only thing I had to do was the slide dinette and pull the beds out. But the bed rod install was not easy.
You can get a Nice small hybrid with gross around 3k and tow it. The bed deployment is easy on hybrids.
The a liner is a good compromise between the 2.
