I'm not positive if still true, diesel and 6.2 gas were ea MSRP about $1000 option. So for a 7-10k trailer, a better option than a 2500 if you keep you payload need under 2000-2200 lbs max. With that said, I've had 3500 in the bed of my truck hauling gravel and a pallet of wall block, handle worst than a 2500. But put a 2nd pallet in a 2500, both are about the same!
I've pulled 8500 with no handling issues either. My max generally speaking for any truck is 2-2.5x RA capacity.

The 6.2 is a little more but I think the little Duramax is the hot tip. I'll be towing between 6,000 and 7,500 lbs. The 2500 didn't make sense for me.
