Try the Costco auto buying program, Consumer Reports build and buy, or something similar before just walking into a dealer. These will give you a good starting point, and you will then know the maximum price you would have to pay even before negotiating. Most indicate price is from dealer stock, but if you live in an area that has lots of dealerships (S. CA so you probably do), you can use that price for ordering also. If one dealer won't, there is probably another close by that will. Be prepared to try different dealers.
X2 on the Costco thing. I just went through the program and shaved another 2K off the "bottom line, true minimum, we're losing money, Hank the sales manager has lost his mind" price.
I keep seeing the issue of price being thrown around internet forums and it's almost as if people have a pride thing in going into the cubicle and arguing for a good deal. In the end you will spend a couple hours and probably spend more than if you just went through Costco.
As for ordering vs. buying from the lot the local Ram/Costco dealer (each brand usually has one dealership in an area that Costco partners with) told me it didn't work on ordered trucks. They easily could have been lying so if you want to order and use the Costco program look into it. I've generally found it's cheaper to find a vehicle on the lot vs. ordering since the dealers are always in such a hurry to get you out the door with a new vehicle.
For comparison sake I paid 81% of MSRP outright (no trade to cloud the numbers). Can any of you guys ordering beat that?
