Outdoor Griddle Heat Issue

Just purchased our new RV with an outdoor slideout griddle underneath a small dorm fridge. The griddle slides out far enough so it will not melt the camper, but ran it per the instructions to "season" the griddle, and it was so hot in the back I was VERY afraid it was going to melt the dorm fridge door. I immediately turned it off so it did not melt. I am concerned on the heat, and at the very least, not sure this can be good for trying to keep items cold if it is heating up like that? Thinking of a heat shield or something, but just curious if anyone has had the issue and what you all did to work around it.
