IMO the residential "dorm fridge" is a useless thing. I would far prefer the space for something else or a cooler.
Here's a cooler option that works great for me: Run a plastic tube off the drain from the cooler and through the floor (seal around the cut with silicone or something similar). Then the cooler can sit somewhat permanently and you just throw more ice and drinks in. The beer is always ICE cold and there's no worry about electricity. Not having to take the cooler out to drain/empty the melted ice is a huge convenience. Also, another trick - leave some slack in the clear tube/drain and you can control how much water sits in the bottom along with the ice by raising/lowering the slack section of tubing.
