Overloading a pickup from time to time - a tradition?

I guess so when I think about it. My dad always overloaded his truck with firewood or occasionally hauling a tractor and trailer too heavy for his truck. In fact, I know pulling a heavy trailer directly resulted in a transmission issue for a smaller truck we had.
