Diesel became LESS reliable than gas motors once emissions controls got tighter and the MFGs rushed half-baked (i.e." low cost") onto their motors.
Even comparing an older diesel to a V10, there's no reason to think the V10 is any less reliable. I have almost 425,000 hard miles on mine, over half of those are towing miles.
The 7.3L is a good motor, however the fuel systems at this age generally need a lot of attention, since the newest 7.3L is now 13 years old! The 6.0 PowerStroke.... All I can say is stay away, unless you have deep pockets and lots of patience.
