This thread and issue really hits home for me, we had a self-imposed tight budget, looked at the myriad of camper options, but with 4 kids, and at the time 2 of them teens, we found nothing that would suit our needs and budget.
We like to camp, mountain bike, and kayak, and usually required two tents to camp, and cram all our gear in/on top of/and racked on the van.
We needed, bumper pull, sleep 6, haul gear, and fit the van. A lot of the aftermarket stuff looked nice, but underneath wasn't rugged enough to suit our adventures.
I ran across this site, with a sub-forum dedicated to DIY conversions of cargo trailers and Uh-Oh, hook was set deep, these folks were unbelievably creative.
We built this, and use it all the time, and never looked back, we love it, and it's modular versatility. It is bare bones, but you can build it out to suit your families needs. The forum has some beautiful examples, and the walls/ceilings are 1" square tubing vs. wood studs.
7x16 Cargo Trailer Conversion
Most everywhere we go, folks want to take a look, most comments center around "It's all you really need", "It's paid for...must be nice", "I wish I had done that", etc. This is a side track from a built out RV, but it still supports the industry.
edit: here's where we added a removable "closet" with a window a/c unit.
