Yes, if you don't need/want the extra sidewall stiffness of LTs then P tires certainly can carry the weight, and are cheaper and more readily available.
But maybe the O.P. was thinking more about the possible safety factor with the heavier construction of an LT tire. Pot holes, road debris may have less impact on an LT than a P? I dunno if that's really the case, but the thought was in the back of my mind when switching to LTs.
