I'm amazed at the "stick with P rated oem" posts. I have to suspect these are folks with limited towing experience.
What a ignorant statement.
I've got over 800k+ miles towing trailers commercially with equipment/flatdeck/enclosed) trailers and a TT with three different 5th wheel trailers starting in the early '60s so I understand benefits vs no benefits of tires on a particular type of truck.
I've also owned several 1/2 ton trucks since my first '59 1/2 ton chevy long narrow bed in '61 and have tried the 10 ply truck tire route (LT E for the new folks). I found no benefits and always went back to a P or 6 ply rated tire (LT C).
The OP asked about the LT275/65-18 which he says comes in a load E tire which has a 34xx lb rating depending on brand. Not the best idea for a 1/2 ton truck with a 3800-4000 lb RAWR.
Now if you can find him a LT 18" C or D in his OEM size then Your "dope" as you call it will be a bit more credible sounding.
