Paint scrubbing off??

Our 2004 seems to be giving up it's paint every time we wash it. But the black streaks will remain no matter what we us. I'm thinking that after 10 years the paint may be worn out.

Anyone know where and about how much it cost to get one repainted?

  • Go to your local Home Depot or paint store and get a gallon of Jasco prepaint treatment. It is a high butyl soap and has some phosphoric acid in it to remove oxidation. Your problem is that the surface (the top coat of paint) is very oxidized so anything that contacts it will react and stain. Use the Jasco and your problems will go away. There will be no need for hard scrubbing.

If you have a situation where the staining is in the paint, itself, you can use dilute phosphoric acid applied with a hand-held spray bottle but be careful, the acid mixture will burn your skin.

I do this kind of stuff for a living, painting and cleaning all manner of things, residential siding, process refrigerant tanks, expensive art frescoes, pipe arrays, interior of mfg. plants, hardwood interior trim, I get my hands on all types of surfaces for renewal and painting.
  • since the that picture I used the roof washing chemicals and my ground person failed to tell me we were leaking over the outside edge (away from me) so NOW I have streaks that nothing seems to remove. Have tried all the normal stuff with a bristle brush to no effect.
  • I had the paint come off from trying to remove decals from the front of my Cherokee. I will repaint the front of the trailer and put a new decal on this spring. I called the factory to see what paint they used.
  • I agree with the simple green to get the black streaks off and you could try spray nine as well. As for the paint on the aluminum it looks fine in your picture. Suggest you take the time and wax and polish it to preserve and protect the finish you have left. It would be awful expensive to repaint and re-stripe your unit. We had a 1986 travel trailer that we bought in 1998. The aluminum siding came back new and shiny by using "turtle wax". I waxed it once a year and still looked new when I sold it in 2002.

  • If anyone wants a look my profile has a picture on her maiden voyage with us this summer. It's about 19.5' in length and when you get up close there a streaks of shinny metal showing through the paint.

  • I have gotten black streaks off, using straight Simple Green.
Painting cost is any body's guess. Length,Metal or Fiberglass. or something else, Travel Trailer or fifth wheel?
Too, many questions. What does a 2004 look like? :)
