For anyone interested, the 3M 77 spray glue works well on the cover fabric. I applied patch on the outside of the cover extending about 6" out from the tear. Then I applied a larger patch on the inside extending about 12" out from the tear. The patched area was a little stiff, but it held up fine when I put the cover back on.
