Personally I think it's better to splice the incoming and outgoing grounds together with a separate jumper to the terminals in this case. Hardly any extra work to do it. A ground wire is normally non-current carrying but under some circumstances can be and the upstream 30A breaker must be able to open under the fault condition. I just didn't like what I saw in the PI EMS. I've also read a few reports of these things catching fire after a power surge on the power line and maybe the ground connections weren't as good as they could have been. JMO as an EE.
