We have done trips to Florida, all across the Midwest, and out to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons with our SUV and 30 foot trailer. I almost always run my fuel level down to between 1/4 and 1/8 of a tank and I have never had a problem. I start looking for my gas stop using Gas Buddy and Google Maps when I reach around a 1/4 tank. You get your best gas mileage during that last 1/3 to 1/4 tank. If we are in a more remote area I adjust accordingly. Between using my distance-to-empty tripometer in my truck and Gas Buddy and Google Maps on my phone there are no issues.
