Planning to tow 7500 pounds with Ram 6.4...ok??

We bought a 2016 Ram 4x4 crew cab with the 6.4 gas motor and 3.73 rear end gears.
We have a small older 5th wheel (6000 pounds) and are looking at a new Keystone Hideout 5th wheel with a dry weight of 7500 pounds.
I'm relatively certain that I have enough truck, but I would like any opinions that folks might have.
Thanks in advance....

  • I didn't know they made a Ram 1500 with the 6.4, I thought the 5.7 was the biggest? I thought the 6.4 was only in 3/4 up
  • With a 1/2 ton truck, the issue is not the towing capacity - it's the pin weight on the rear axle. Having 4WD decreases your payload, as well, due to the added weight of the front axle and transfer case.

Load the truck up (people, fuel, hitch and junk) and head for the nearest CAT scale. Get separate axle weights. Subtract the scale weight for the rear axle from the GVWRR (rear rating) on the door sticker; that will be what you have left for "payload" or pin weight. Then calculate 20 - 23% of the GVWR (gross weight rating - NOT dry weight) for the fifth wheel. That will be your estimated loaded pin weight. You might be surprised how close you might be with a 1/2 ton truck.

  • You're going to use some gas but it should be a very well matched combo.
  • shouldn't be an issue but you note a 7500lb DRY weight, I would think that you might want to realize you might add an extra 1000lbs of "stuff" into that trailer making it 8500lbs.
  • I think you will be very happy with that combination. Use tow/haul mode whenever the RV is connected. You may also want to range limit to lock out 6th gear. Happy Camping!
