Yesterday my wife hurt her knee on a hitch on the back of someone's pickup in a parking lot. I don't know if it was a TT owner's truck but the lesson was clear. We need to be considerate and remove the hitch after we are done towing.
Don't want this to sound harsh or mean (it isn't meant to be though)but..
Most hitches only stick out 6"-12" from the bumper.. That is 1 FOOT OR LESS.
Pretty much no reason for anyone to be walking and hugging the backend of vehicles in a parking lot..
Walking that close to vehicles in parking lots can HIDE the person walking from OTHER vehicles moving about or even attempting to back out of a parking spot. Other vehicles parked beside the vehicle backing out will HIDE you and they will not be able to see you when walking close the backends of vehicles. Its called BLIND SPOTS for a reason..
Not to mention folks tend to HIT the vehicles with packages and other personal items while walking.. I have a truck with unexplained on how and when they got there on one of the tail lights and another truck that had mysterious scratches the length of the tailgate. Most likely in both case it was someone walking too close to my truck in a parking lot..
I have personally had people suddenly appear and walk BEHIND MY VEHICLE AS I AM BACKING OUT!
Glad your DW is OK but perhaps both of you should walk a little further way from the backend of vehicles.. Might even save your lives when a driver suddenly starts backing out of a parking place!
