I don't know if the quality of the manuals has gotten much worse or if I'm just more aware of it now that I've worked as a tech writer. I've been very disappointed in most of the manuals I've read. One recent problem I had referred you to the web page of the manufacturer. It said to click on the "xyz" link in the home page. There was no "xyz" link. Some of the manuals sound like they were translated from a foreign language or give wrong information.
As a tech writer for the military, the final step of our manual development process is a validation, which is to give the manual to "Napoleon's Corporal" and have him use it to complete the tasks in the manual. If he can accomplish the task we figure that the manual is correct. If he can't follow the instructions, we rewrite them to clarify the guidance.
I've tried to locate fuses on my FW and there are no schematics showing the fuse. I called the manufacturer and gave them the information about my FW and they gave me a list of five possible locations for the fuse I need to change.
