"The Gift of Fear" a book by Gavin De Becker addresses the situation you encountered. It's a great book and I recommend it. It's basic premise is that we should always pay attention to that prickly sense of fear; it is almost always valid. He stresses that it is extremely rare for bad things to come out of nowhere; there are always warning signs that unfortunately get ignored.
