The 68RFE is an electronic adaptive learning transmission like most transmissions these days. It will learn and modify the clutch apply rate depending on how the truck is driven and its duty cycle. Basically, if you drive it like you stole it then it will shift firm. If you drive is like a grandpa then it will shift smooth.
Although I don't think the 68RFE shifts clunky. It actually shift too smoothly for my liking in stock form and had it tuned for a more firmer shift. A quick firm shift is better for the transmission than a long smooth shift anyways.
