I am not anti spanking, I just remember the frequent spankings and beatings I got and it didn't make me stop what I was told not to do. The stick and carrot worked best for me.
When I was about 8 or 9, I bit my fingernails until they bled. My mother tried gloves, socks over my hand, every horrible tasting crud she could coat my nails with and yes the spankings continued, until, my older brother said if I quit immediately and never did it again, he would give me a dollar for each hand.
