Problem with new trailer, or is it the grandson?

Brought home our new trailer yesterday. Three of our grandkids showed up today to check it out. Our 8 year grandson discovered the ladder on the back and sure enough he was crawling around up on the roof. What do you do to keep grandkids and other folks off of your ladder? Product info would be much appreciated. And yes, he got a swat on the butt from his mom when he came down.

Sounds like a curious kid growing up, being outside, climbing, hopefully he is jumping in mud puddles and skinning his knees. Just keep an eye on the kids, try to let them make their own mistakes (hopefully without being too dangerous - like on top of a camper), and don't jump all over them when they do a perfectly normal "kid thing", but explain how it is dangerous.

If the kid returns and still tries to do something like climb that ladder, then discipline him.
  • Explain how this ladder differs from one found in a playground: less safety features; not made for regular usage..whatever comes to your mind. Ask why he might not think this is a safe plaything which engages him in the discussion instead of falling back on the ever popular throuh the generations' response of "..because I said so..."

Helps kiddos to develop critical thinking even when an adult is not around.

Didn't quite take and he's still fooling around the ladder?
Stop in your tracks, swivel your head and clearly enunciate his full name whilst giving the stinkeye. Works most every time.
  • Tell them not to
    Then tell them again
Then the next time bad stuff starts happening
  • What his mom did should take care of it. If he was my son I would have done the same thing that she did.

  • 1. Tell them not to.

    2. Make the ladder inaccessible to them by either shortening it so that you have to use a smaller ladder to get up to it,

    or

put a piece of plywood on the outside of the treads to block access.
