Propane pigtail failure

I had a line on my second tank rupture. It was blowing propane so I shut it off and removed the bottle. The bottle still feels quite heavy like it still contains propane. I replaced the pigtail but I can't get the gas to flow. I tried it on the other side that I know works and still no flow. Is there something that has to be done to the valve or tank after a ruptured hose to make it work again? Could the tank have lost all the compressed air and only contain liquid (is that even possible?). A new 10 gal tank is about $130. here (filled) so I would like to get this to work if possible. Thanks!

  • Tanks are about 25.75" tall and 12.5" diameter. There is no way they are 29" tall! I do believe I might have had a rub problem on the tank cover. At one point I had a tank level gauge on that tank that might have pushed the line into the cover or made it bend more severely.

    If they actually put 8.8 gallons in then you have 40# cylinders (which must have been an optional upgrade for your TT)

    Really hard to put much more then 7.5 gallons in 30# unless bleeder valve was left open and propane was spewing out to atmosphere (really tough with 20#)

    How tall are yours?

    As for pigtail hose rupturing.........3 yrs. old??? Was hose rubbing on bracket/collar/Cylinder?
  • Don't understand why ball check valve did not work. We don't use much propane. This tank is the original (3 years old) and has never had any propane drawn from it. The other tank finally ran out and when the regulator switched over the hose ruptured.
    When I took the empty tank to get it refilled they put in 8.8 gallons. Did they over fill it or just rip me off?
  • First....there is NO compressed air.
    Propane cylinder has liquid propane that 'boils' off to a vapor. That is all that is in the cylinder---liquid and vapor

    Second....New pigtail hose.
    Does it have a big GREEN knob for attaching to cylinder?
    The ACME nut (green) screws onto service valve ......when properly connected it opens a spring loaded valve inside the service valve. If not fully tightened down the 'nub' inside ACME nut will not open the spring loaded valve and no propane can flow out

    Also IF you open cylinder service valve too quickly an excess flow check valve inside the ACME nit will trip and greatly restrict propane flow out of cylinder.

    Close cylinder service valve.....wait 30 seconds.
    Then SLOWLY open service valve.......listening for a 'click' then you can fully open service valve. (The click is the ball check valve resetting )


    And unless you changed out your cylinders they are most likely 30# cylinders (7.1 gallon) vs 40# cylinders (10 gallon)

    Just side note.........when pigtail hose broke. The ball check valve should have tripped restricting propane flow out of broken hose.
    Surprised it didn't....must have been pretty oiled up---dirty
