Propane Tanks Expired

Takes a few minutes at a propane dealer. I have never been charged! If it does not have new style of valve then it will take longer and cost for new valve.

The same thing happened to me here at the local RV dealer.
It wasn't difficult for me in Florida at a LP gas distributor. He stamped the handle which bought me an additional 10 years, I think. You don't want the tank to be rusty; maybe a coat of spray paint will help the inspector decide to certify it.

About ten dollars and 30 minutes of your time. Drop them off, and go shopping. Pick them up full later.

Under $10 where I live... very little time involved. Better just to get it done than drive around a "maybe" find a place to fill it.

Take it to one of those Propane tank exchange places.

It's a 30 pound tank.

Usually, you can shop around and someone will fill it but not a big issue to get it re-certified.

I recently took a tank that I had obtained by an exchange to be refilled. The dealer told me that the tank needed to be recertified. I asked him to show me the date. He did and the tank had expired ten years ago! The tank looked to be in good condition so the dealer said "I'll refill it just this one time for you."

Another thing about exchanges: they may be very convenient, but they are more expensive because the refilled tanks are not filled to their rated capacity. It's generally better to refill tanks at a dealer that meters the propane. That way you only pay for the propane actually put into your tank.

When you use the exchange places you typically get a tank with 15 pounds of propane in them. I work at such a place and get tired of people saying that we are ripping them off. It says right on the exchange station that the tank that you are getting has 15 pounds of propane in the tank. We are not selling you 20 pounds of propane, we are exchanging your tank with a different tank with 15 pounds.
I personally go to a refill station that charges me for the gallons of propane that they put in. This is much cheaper. I typically pay $10 to $15 for 20 pounds of propane.
Now people will be posting that they can only fill the tank to 80% so you can't get 20 pounds into the tank. The correct answer is that these are really tanks that would hold 25 pounds of propane if they were filled to the top. They can only be filled to 80% so your 25 pound tank is in effect a 20 pound.
