There is an app called backcountry it built by critters. I runs off satellite and does not require cell connection. You just need to pre load ares that you will be exploring. I use it all of the time foe snowmobiling . It has a tracking system and a ton of other great features. Only down side is I know the any android system work great with this app not sure about I phone. If it is compatible its a no brainer. I've used 1/2 dozeen of different gps systems and this is hands down the best by far. Also search YouTube for backcountry gps systems. Good luck.
