I think there are a couple advantages to the Chevy/GMC offering. It gives the Cadillac/Buick dealers a pickup to sell, this is why GMC tends to be the more "higher end" of the two pickups. The vast majority of GMC pickups sold are the Denali trim level, which speaks to the market that GM goes after with the GMC name plate and that generates a lot of income.
It gives GM the opportunity to make visual and content variations to the same pickup and giving them the ability to appeal to more buyers. This is very evident with the 2020 HD pickups, until the BUYING public comes to terms with the look of the Chevy version or GM changes it in a MCE, GMC will enjoy a surge in HD sales, as their version of the new HD appears to be much better recieved than does the Chevy, at least on the internet.
There are loyal GMC buyers who if reduced to only one option may go somewhere else. GMC sells more pickups than does most everyone below the big the three options, so giving up a portion of those sales, probably doesnt sit very well in a boardroom.
I am sure that ending GMC was a conversation in the big downturn when GM slimmed down their lineup. GMC came through that intact, and so I dont see them erasing GMC anytime soon.
