I worked for a contractor in the early 70s on the surveying crew. We had one of the early model Toyota Land Cruisers and it was the newbie's job to fill the tank and check the equipment each morning while the party chief discussed the work needed that day with the superintendent.
The new guy filled the back with wooden stakes, flagging, etc. and pulled up to the twin pumps in the equipment yard. One pump read "Fuel" (for diesel) and the other read "Gas." Since the gauge on the dash read "Fuel," that's what he pumped. We got about 500' down the road before the Toyota died. I cannot recall that guy's actual name because from then on everyone called him "Diesel." :-)
