Have you ever heard of "Winterized Diesel" - basically it is about 10% unleaded gas added to the diesel fuel - so it will not gel (get to thick in the tank at 10F) and so it will burn easier, and start the engine at 10F.
When they pump diesel fuel from Long Back CA refineries to Las Vegas, do you think they have two 6" diameter pipelines going all the way? No, they have large holding tanks in Victorville, Barsto, and Las Vegas. They deliver diesel fuel one week, and unleaded the next week. In between they can pump a 'ball' through the line to separate the fuels, but it all end up in the same tank.
For the mixed fuel, they can sell it as airplane fuel, home heating oil, or send it to a place with large boilers that does not really care how much gas is mixed in with the boiler fuel oil.
1/2 gallon in a 34 gallon fuel tank is not that much. It will make it burn hotter, and will be OK in the winter, but not so good in the summer time, as it will be burning way to hot. . .
Yes if you get more than 2 gallons of unleaded in the diesel tank it is time to call a tow truck, take it someplace to drain it, and refill with diesel fuel. No need to change the fuel filter unless you started the engine.
I once put about 1 gallon in my 20 gallon gas tank on my 75 Ford F-350 with a 460" engine and 650 CFM Carb. It raised the octane level by about 4 points! No pinging on that drive. . . Not suggested for modern cars with fuel injection, catalytic converters, and smog controls. But that old truck ran fine with a little diesel in the tank.
Have a great day, and hopefully never fill the truck with the wrong stuff!
