I did the DEF thing as well. I unhooked the fuel line at the under hood filter housing and pushed it into a suitable hose, then by cycling the key on and off was able to pump the fuel tank dry. Just to be certain there was no remaining DEF I removed the fuel tank. It had a couple ounces of fuel left in it but no DEF. The tank is very easily removed on the Ford I think it only cost me about an hour of time and 50 liters of fuel.
