FWIW, a few decades ago, I stored my JD450 at a farmer's yard for a month or so. When I went to pick it up, it was running rough and only put out about 40% of the rpms and maybe 40% power. When I asked the gentleman if he'd used it at all, he said that he used it for an hour or so and didn't want to shortchange me so he had put 20 gallons of gas in it (~45 gallon tank). "Gas?" says I. "Gas!" says he. After telling him that he might lose his farmer card, I simply ran the dozer at whatever RPMs I could for a few hours (walking it, not working) and then filled up with diesel. No real problems resulted.
....but I'd never do that with a modern automotive diesel engine.
