Purchasing used...how to know if it is stolen or not?

So, I'm in the market for a used truck camper...first time to have a TC. I was surprised to find that for much of the country, no title is required for a truck camper...but in thinking on it, I guess...

When you go look at the camper just take a picture of the serial number then call you local police department and ask them to run it to see if its stolen; When I was a cop we did this all the time. We just wouldn't give any information other than that. Then if you buy it, do up a bill of sale with the seller's information. Very easy to do.
