The 3 center lights indicate a width of over 80" the 2 outer lights indicate the corners of the wider load.

Because they are really cool! :C No, I don't need em by law, but I'm glad I found a truck on the lot that had em. I just like the look. I'll add my thanks to those who came up with the real answer though. I figured it was something like that, but I'll admit I didn't know exactly.

They put them there so you can't get your truck through your 7' garage door!

Bottom line, whether required by law or not, they are bling.

It took me longer to find reference for the non-believers than to answer. The WA DOT information was actually easier to find than the federal statues.

All of us truck camper owners are "in the know" on them there lights!

Any vehicle over 80" wide requires three identification lamps centered at the highest point at the front and rear. If the tow vehicle is under 80", it does not require the three lights when towing a wider trailer as long as the trailer is properly illuminated.
