Get out a ruler and measure it. You'll be surprised to learn just how long the contact patch actually is when a tire is aired down even on a flat surface. It also depends on how big the tire is, but that is also a reason that a larger diameter tire, all else equal and even ignoring the ground clearance advantage, has lower contact pressure.
I have, they do grow quite a bit but not triple, at least not in my experience.
Running 35" KM2's, 32" TSL Radials, or 33" TSL Bias I never saw that much contact patch change, but it does get a bit bigger.
That was also on fairly light Toyota's.
