I think the difference between "upgrade from tent" and "downgrade from house" is accurate.
I also think sometimes folks forget how carefree most kids really are. I could sleep happily anywhere when I was young. I've seen kids happily fall asleep on floors, draped over the sides of couches, etc. - things I would never dream of doing as an older adult. I remember even as a teen and young adult that we would rather all sleep on the floor as a group than to be "comfortable" in a bed separated.
If any of the kids in my life (in any era) had hated their parents because they had to sleep on the floor of an RV (or hotel, or house) during vacations, I'd be looking at a kid with other much more serious issues going on.
