Buy a 5 - 7 gallon water jug (maybe two). Use it, and a funnel to fill your tank. Count the number of jugs needed.
When you fill the hot water heater, it will take six gallons.
For boondocking, you'll probably want those jugs to carry extra water.
We boondock at our lake property, I carry four of the 7 gallon jugs. I even installed a transfer pump, so I don't have to lift and hold the jugs, when filling the tank.
