I don't think that gas pricing or gas mileage would ever make up for the much higher up front cost of buying a diesel. Except for the folks with super heavies, one could make a gasser work. Diesels are a lot like our campers, a luxury. It costs more but the pleasure it brings is worth it.
Buying diesel is like spending extra money to buy house in better neighborhood.
In the past I bought F450 for about $8000.
Used it 8 years, adding 100k miles to sell it shy of 300k for about $5000.
So it cost me about $400 a year in depreciation.
I work on my vehicles and regardless the age, they are in top condition so that is one part of the story, but tell me how much can you ask for 12 years old gasser with almost 300,000 miles on it?
Later on F250 sold for +- buying price with 330k on odometer.
On my current 2007 diesel KBB gives $9700 value.
I paid $7000 about 3 years ago at auction.
