Thanks for all the information. Loos like I have a lot of reading to do. I've always been hesitant with diesels due to cost. We don't have the funds for expensive repairs and have been very fortunate that the 2 Fords we've owned have never let us down. Regular maintenance and tires have been it. I'll do a lot of research and hopefully find a great truck. Thanks again. D
Can I add that if your don't have money for costly repairs and/or can do work yourself, you would best off with a gas powered truck and deal with less power in the hills.
The diesel trucks although great and long lasting....the "bullet proofing" of a 6.0 Ford will cost you 2-4k to pay someone to do it depending on the amount of bullet proofing you do.
That is to just make reliable. Sure, some have made it many, many miles without touching it...but do some reading before you jump. MOST 6.0 owners love their trucks but MOST will also recommend the preventive bullet proofing as well. I'm a Ford guy, sold my 7.3 and was seriously considered a 6.0...but got scared to dive in.I turn my own wrenches and don't fear taking on large projects.
Still went with a Cummins...and ripped all the emissions junk, tuned it so it runs like a "old" diesel.
I'd go gas in your situation.
