If you're only going 3000mi per year, it seems like a no brainer to get a large gas engine. Fuel consumption is really rather irrelevant when driving so few miles. Rate of return on the expense of the diesel engine is quite poor when you're going to be doing 30k mi in 10 years. That buys a lot of gas. I probably wouldn't even replace my fuel filter once during that time, on a diesel, I sure would be.
I drive 5-8k mi per year and would strongly consider a gasser next truck I buy. The newer gas engines are much better than 10 years ago. You're in a warmer climate than I am, but driving a diesel here in winter seriously sucks.
