I appreciate all the responces, even you 2oldmen! Thanks to suggestions, the trans seems to be the biggest up coming problem, I think we will attack getting a new performance transmission and chip it instead of wasting money on just the converter and get it taken care of now instead of breaking down in some one horse town.
Once again thank you all for your suggestions and responces, its good to hear that most of the responces were in favor of the 7.3
We hope to run across some of you on the road in the up coming years!
Any more suggestion are still appreciated!

Lots of opinions and advice. Well here are a few questions.
I understand the trans work as a 150K 4R100 could use a freshen up if your pulling a 38 footer.
My question is do you know you need to chip the motor? I would suggest get the best trans you can afford and 3 gauges. Trans temp, exhaust temp and boost. at that point see if the stock 7.3 does the job for you. I have a 99 F550 with 240K on it. Yep rebuilt trans but stock engine is all I need. 3500 lb cabover and 5000LB of carhauler and race truck. It does have 4.88 gears sow with the 3.73's you may need a little more grunt. If it were me I would pull it a few times to see if you need to retune.
It has been done on the 7.3 many times but a stock 7.3 is a 500K motor if cared for.
I know 16 quart oil changes are a *****. :{)
