Not sure if Ford does this like Ram, but my 6 speed isn't geared much lower than a traditional 4 speed, the fifth and sixth gears are effectively double over drives giving better fuel economy.
I do agree, let the engine work in the upper RPM range as its a small block with overhead cams, it makes power up top. But pulling heavy you might never see fifth or sixth gear.
