Quietest generators?

I like the Yamaha 2800i, it has been well documented on this site - seems reasonably quiet and can power an AC unit, without being too heavy.

All you experienced generator users out there, what are you using that keeps the neighbours happy? Is the Yamaha truly nice and quiet when in power saving mode? And if running the AC, is it too loud?

Another possible option;
Has anyone seen or used the Champion Power Equipment No.75531i Inverter Generator, 3100-watt? It is rated a lot quieter than the Yamaha - (59db vs 67db).... although it is 80 lbs vs 65 lbs. The extra weight could be a deal breaker.. not right now, but likely in my future.
  • Thanks for the replies so far....

    I plan to set up our TT with solar panels to keep our batteries topped up, but run a genset in eco mode once in a while to do that job if we're not keeping up.
    We are VERY sensitive to disturbing others with our noise of any kind - so we always want to do the right thing. A/C would likely be run only at times when everyone else is doing the same thing, or when we are alone in the boonies, so perhaps we won't have to worry too much about the noise level of a Yammy 2800i.
    It seems more cost effective to buy one generator rather than two, although if only one is needed most of the time, it would clearly be easier to handle and operate.

    Does anyone put a plywood box (open on one end for ventilation) over their genset to mitigate some noise? I wondered if that would work, facing the open side away from people.
  • I've found through personal observation "quiet" generators are truly only quiet when idling in eco mode. This is also when they produce the least power.

    According to my unscientific ears, Honda and Yamaha are both pretty loud at full throttle (max output). Really, that's the only way I run my twin Yamaha 2000's; wide open - I don't use the eco mode unless it's just idling for exercise (boiling water on a timer) or running in my truck bed while I drive.

    Other campers I have witnessed feel the need to run their (they've all been Honda actually) all day long, idling away in eco mode, trickle charging their batteries. To each their own I guess. I lug around 800 AH of battery so I can run silent for a few days, and then do a full throttle recharge for a few hours.

    If it's into the upper 80s and I need a break from the heat, I fire the twins, up full throttle and crank on the AC. I try to put the twins somewhere their noise will be least directed at others, and as far from my coach as 50ft of cord will allow.
  • Well, honestly, no generator no matter how quiet is gonna make the neighbors happy if run continously. With that said, I have the Champion 75537i, and it is pretty quiet. I can barely hear it inside the trailer with the air running. It may not be quite as quiet as the honda's/Yamaha's but at a fraction of the cost, Im ok with that.

    I purchased this generator for the occasional boon-dock when there may be no neighbors, or the weekend tailgate where everyone is running one, or for the occasional power outage at home to power a few selected items(gas furnace, refrigerator/freezer, TV, etc).
