R-Pod 179

Does anyone have the new R-Pod 179? We saw one for the first time at a dealer last week. We used to have an R-Pod 173 and hated it - no slide, no storage, but this one has STORAGE, as well as a slide! It's a couple of feet longer than our old 173 and a just little heavier, but it sure would be nice to have a bathroom again...

R-Pod 179
  • Just from the links on this thread I like the Econ 16RB. I have never seen any of these up close though.
  • We looked at a new 179 and liked the rear kitchen counter. Lots of space for a small TT.
What turned me off of that particular model was the location of the door. You can't open the door all the way back because of the wheel well behind it. Upon further inspection, I found that the little holder that keeps the door open was broken. The screws that hold the door part of the holder were all coming out. I tried to put them back in the holes but not enough backing to hold them. And this new unit was just delivered to the dealer. Poor design or construction....
    Just my $.02
  • Just bought a RP 179. You can open the bathroom door if the table isn't in the way. Dealer in Illinois had it for $15,000. Pulling it with a Traverse mileage goes from 24mpg with no-tow, to 8mpg at 70-mph, to 13mpg at 62mph, so I'll be driving 62. Nice storage inside. I'm looking at how to add a permanent inverter, which is an annoying omission. Like the solar ready hookup, so I'm adding a 120w zamp.

And 11-12 mpg again. What do you get now, 17? 18? ;) It's funny, I have a TT and I'm looking at A frames. You have an A and are thinking of a trailer.

I looked at the floor plan and I'm wondering if the bathroom door can be opened when the slide is in.

LOL! If you look at Aliners, get an Expedition - wish we had! It's a foot longer (makes a difference in such a tiny trailer!) and can come with a wet bath or just a cassette potty built in. I'd skip the wet bath, but go for the cassette potty; JMHO. The wet bath takes up too much precious interior space, IMO.

Yea, we get 17-18 pulling our Classic with our Pathfinder; we heard it's a little less (maybe 15?) pulling the Expedition, due to a slight weight increase, and it's a little wider (more wind drag). This one's also on our short list. They cost $17,900 at a local dealer. As I said in my above post, we'll probably keep our Classic another year, then decide whether to keep it or sell it and get something else.

You're probably right that you can't access the bathroom in the 179 with the slide in, but we don't use the potty while on the road anyway. We never carry fresh water anyway. Plus, it gives us a good reason to pull over and stretch our legs and walk the dogs at a rest stop.

We went to look at R-Pod's last fall and found them a little lacking in height and storae space. We bought the unit parked next to the R-Pod and love it. We can stand up anywhere, has an island queen bed with storage underneath, and the bathroom is actually fairly spacious with a tub.

Tows real nice with a Nissan Frontier. Yep 11 - 12 MPG but we're out of canvas! Bit lower cost than the R-Pod too, at least on sale it was.

    Good luck with your search.

Previous R-Pods WERE woefully lacking in storage (and most still are), which is why we didn't like our 173, but the new 179 has a closet, as well as several cabinets and drawers; never mind the slide and u-dinette. Also, the gray/black tanks are 30 gallons - a lot bigger than your new one (15/10). We also like the price point: $16,999 at our local dealer. We're not in the market right now; maybe in a year, so we're not committed to this camper yet. We're still not sure we're willing to give up the gas mileage again either. We'll see after another year in the Aliner.
  • If you had an R-Pod and hated it... I'd probably stay away. If you loved the R-Pod but just wished it had storage and a slide... Then I think you found your next camper.
