You might be thinking about "Turbo lag".
Don't think it matters much whether it's a diesel or gasser, mostly depends upon the turbo. Some engines have twin turbos, one for low rpms and another for high rpms that effectively eliminate the lag.
Some people who really like to stomp on the their EcoBoosts claim there's some lag, but I sure don't notice it. My old 2005 Passat TDI definitely has some lag.
Don't know about the EcoDiesel.
The new Cummins 5L turbo diesel in the Nissan XD has a sequential twin turbo, and they claim no lag, none, nada, nein.
