Take a look at the profit margins on luxury trucks, and you will likely come to the concluson that they are not a fad.
And they seem to be selling very well. If you ever have a chance to drive one, you are more likely to understand.
I for one don't understand why anyone would rather have a utilitarian speced truck. But the beauty of a free market is that both options are available, and you can get what you want.
Definitely agreed on profit margin - the manufacturers make a ton on the higher trimmed trucks.
I went with a basic truck, but it has plenty of features for me - it's a Tradesman spec'd out to a basic SLT level Ram. I could afford a higher trim level, and I did look at them some, but nothing on the higher end trucks really moved the needle for me aside from leather and decent wheels (both of which are inexpensive aftermarket fixes). I didn't really see any benefit to all the other stuff and in fact a lot of it I didn't even like such as the extra chrome, running boards, two tone paint, wheel fenders and etc. Even a lot of the interior comfort stuff didn't do anything for me - I've yet to encounter an automatic climate control system that didn't annoy me, for example.
I recognize that some people do value those extras (including my wife), but to me they just don't move the needle and I'd rather save on the extra expense. As you said, choice is good.
