Ram 1500 Diesel Towing Capacity?

I was at the National Fair here in Georgia. They had a bunch of Ram trucks. I looked at a Ram 1500 Eco Diesel. This one had a payload of 1186, IIRC... it was just under 1200. Price tag ws like 52K. WOW... Of course, that is sticker.

So, that one was over the 980 or whatever that others are reporting... better, but still not all that great. But, that gas mileage is crazy good.

You mean all the HD trucks running around here with their mirrors out would just have to push a button to fold them in? This has always been a pet peeve of mine, maybe I'm suffering from mirror envy.

What trim level did you get? The standard mirrors are power on the Big Horn and higher. The tow mirrors will be power in 2017 not sure why there is a hold up on them. The HD trucks have power fold tow mirrors now.

Fair enough. What I was asked was, is the rating 7000 or 4000. Since then it's clear the rating is the higher of what I'd seen talked about, which raised the original question. I just wanted to make sure that if we needed to haul 6 or 7000# with DW driving and me using the 350 ahead of her towing our TT, it could be done.

I got the truck yesterday for an overnight. The ride seems okay, a bit rougher than the F150 I drove, but okay. Noisier on our rough road than the 150 but the mpg is nice, 23+ for around 125 miles. Since most of that was up hill, from 6000' to 9500 at Wilkerson Pass, it will improve when I return it to the dealer, as that will be down hill.

My biggest complaint are those hideous side mirrors. They make it through the garage door with just an inch or so on each side. With all the goofy gadgetry you'd think Ram would have had electric collapsing standard.

Spent three days shopping Ford, one day shopping Toyota, another shopping Nissan, stopped by a Chevy dealer and yesterday looking at a Ram. Hardly hung up on one brand, but prefer a diesel as I've had several.

Bottom line, this is what I want. But not if I have to pay more than it's worth to me. Been doing this for well over 50 years. The only mistake was my first new one, and that was because I was a 21 year old kid who couldn't wait two days for the dealer to come around to my price to get the 426 wedge I wanted and settled for an Impala SS I never liked.

Just pulled the trigger on a remaining 2015. Brilliant silver, black leather Laramie. Sunroof, air suspension, 3.92. All the option boxes checked it appears. 12k off list. Really excited. Just got off the eco diesel forum and our 3900 lb coach wet is going to be a cake walk compared to what these guys are towing with this little diesel, and most of them have the 3.55 diff. Stunning mileage reports of 14 or more lugging some real loads in hilly and high altitude regions.

Pick it up late next week, as you have to travel to find one that fits your needs. One word of advice, the 2016 models are pricey. I was hung up on getting a 16 until this deal came along. It has big shoes to fill, our 08 F150 was a reliable but very thirsty horse. Time will tell.

My Laramie has all the options but the sunroof and has a tow rating of 7400# and a payload of 1048#. tows my 24' 6000#+ boat without any problem at all and makes 15 mpg doing it.

Well I guess my point is that I want a truck that if 5 of my 210 lbs buddies go out hunting we still have enough payload left over for at least one deer.

I've got just over #1900 payload on my 13 F150 and I'm within #600 of that towing a #5000 TT.. Oh, it has over #11,000 "tow rating"..
But, I'm also only #400 from the rear axle rating..

Only 2 people in the truck and stuff in the bed, but still... ;)

900# is the payload from my reading, not much at all is left after deducting TW. But DW's a lightweight, and I don't let her have much more than a quarter tank of fuel - Don't want her getting away! :B
