- My wife had an 05 VW Bettle with a 1.9 liter TD. It would get in the 40's everyday. The best we got was 48 on a trip once. She doesn't do a lot of stop and go driving. I would say it would have been in the upper 30's in that type of driving.
She has a 1.8 liter turbo gas Bettle now and it's pretty consistent at 23 MPG every day. wilber1 wrote:

No diesel engine has any business being in anything smaller than a three quarter ton. You heard it here first
