Here's an article that basically reports a 14 years to get your ROI back on the VM Motori diesel compared to the Hemi. And the analysis also used the same cost for both diesel and gas and we know that won't ever happen again with ULSD.
So anyone who purchases a Ecodiesel must be drinking the I-talian Koolaid. :B
BTW... I'll take a Hemi anyday.
I read the article, and it made sense at the time it was published. However, average delta over the past 2 or 3 years was only 7% more for diesel.
Another change since the article is that the EPA is regulating gas from 30ppm sulfur down to 10ppm. With the advanced filtering required to meet this goal, I'm thinking that the cost differential between Regular and Diesel is going to evaporate. Diesel prices sky-rocketed with the mandate of 500ppm down to 15ppm sulfur in Diesel. Here in the PNW, I'm already seeing diesel 10 cents per gallon less than regular gasoline. It's amazing how much things shift in a short amount of time. However, one thing working against the Ecodiesel is its use of European oils that are currently difficult to acquire in the U.S. (some ACEA C3 certified oil or something like that). So there would be a premium in oil changes and fuel filter maintenance as well, but it isn't as huge amount. I'm finding that my Cummins only costs me roughly $80 more a year to maintain because of fuel filters. Oil and oil filter is nearly a wash compared to my 2010 F-150.
However, 14 years seems blown out of proportion. When compared against the Hemi, the diesel is only 2,850 bucks more. That's made up for in less than 5 years at current prices. I also wish they did the analysis based on combined EPA Ratings. According to the goverment's information, the Ecodiesel would save me about $3,500 in 5 years over the HEMI and about $2,750 in 5 years over the Ecoboost. Seems worth the premium and far less than the 14 years you're quoting.
