You don't know what you are talking about. VW is one of the most highly unionized companies around. The Touareg is assembled in Bratislava, Slovakia and according to their website:
Responsibility for employees
Volkswagen Slovakia and the trade union organisation have concluded a collective agreement to protect the interests of both contracting parties. Their common goal is above all to ensure lasting development for Volkswagen Slovakia as well as to develop competitive capability both within and outside the Volkswagen Group. The collective agreement is therefore a starting point for mutual responsibility, which also ensures understanding of employees' social concerns and consideration of market economy requirements.
Volkswagen Slovakia is working together with the works council to introduce flexible work schedule models designed to counter sales fluctuations and to safeguard the employment situation in such situations. The employees also receive support for supplemental pension schemes and also receive additional support when they retire. Employee satisfaction is given high priority. Accommodation, payment, mobility and flexibility are given particular emphasis

And I suspect drunkenness is more of an issue in Central Europe (Slovakia) than in North America.
