Where do I start...... In the Ram? Utterly pointless, yes. But only because Ram is taking the wussy truck approach. They could build whatever they want to accommodate any engine they think would sell.
As for it being "fuel sucking"? It should be far thriftier than the big diesels, and likely will match the lower end V6's, yet pull better than an Ecoboost.
So not putting in a giant diesel motor makes it "pointless"? I'd point you to their growing sales numbers to clearly highlight that it is anything but pointless.
What you don't seem to understand is that 70% of 1/2 ton trucks never tow more than 1000lbs or do much if any actual "work". That makes the small diesel a perfect choice.
You just can seem to understand that your particular wish list for a truck is not what the general public wants.
1) You do realize the 70% you speak of are probably not the folks posting on an RV forum, right?
2) Read what I was replying to, someone who stated the 5.0 cummins would be pointless in the Ram. And with <1000# payload, it would be fairly pointless. Not sure 1000# payload makes any sense in a full size truck, end of story.
And for folks not using a truck for towing, a diesel makes almost no sense at all, given the premium to buy, and the lower performance level in general. Gas engines last as long as most trucks do anyhow. And certainly as long as any pumps and injectors on diesels. Cheaper to replace too.
The 3.0 VM will be a great engine for those not in a hurry, towing moderate weight, and who don't need passing power; assuming it lives up to it's hype.
And before you jump to conclusions that I'm anti-Dodge, I'd say the Ram 2500/3500 is the truck to beat in the HD class.
