Chrysler needs to improve the fuel economy of it's fleet or heavy penalties will be cutting profits hence the reason for the diesel power. Now they need to sell >50% of their trucks equipped with the V6 Pentastar (a engine still with some problems) and the ED.
They'd better drop the 5.7 if they want to achieve it.
If that is the case, then Ford better drop the EcoBoost and GM better drop their V8s, as they are all within one or two MPG in the EPA ratings.
Ford will be dropping the 6.2 in the F150 for the '15 model and will be going on a diet to improve MPG, but in all seriousness Chrysler is not in good shape to meet the next CAFE milestone and with their strong growth in trucks lately puts them in worse shape to meet this goal.
It's a double sided sword! :W
That is the very reason for the Ecodiesel and the 8 and 9 speed transmissions - to improve MPG. Chrysler has always been a truck company - the RAM, minivans and Jeeps have been their bread and butter. I am a Mopar guy, but until recently, the only car they make that I would consider is the full size 300/Charger (wife has a 300) and those aren't very helpful with MPG.
The new 200 looks to be a winner, and I think the Dart is an improvement over everything since the first years of the Neon. Fiat gaining traction in the US will also help with their CAFE ratings. That said, I agree, they have a long way to go to avoid CAFE penalties.
